My Advice For New Students

Hi guys, time flies! I can’t believe summer is almost over. I hope you enjoyed my blog and I do it helped you to get more familiar with York along with the student support services it offers. Here is some of my advice for first year students:

Be Energetic and there are many new things for you to explore at school!

As a first year student, you have much free time to join volunteer work or attend school events to meet new people instead of just focusing on school. I am pretty sure you will get what I mean once you get into your third or fourth year. :p Also, here is a tricky part of course selection for new students: you don’t have to take 30 full credits in your first year. Many students may think that they should take 30 credits each year to graduate but they forget university is more flexible for students. They do not need to take some specific amount of credits in a year. That’s the reason why we have summer school! J So if you are not adapt to the new teaching style or the atmosphere, feel free to choose lower credits that is suitable for you.

Don’t stress out!

No matter what happens in your first year, don’t be scared of the new challenges or changes you are facing with in your school, like bad grades and etc. It is not the end of world. What you need to do is to try to adapt to the new environment gradually through asking Peer Mentors, who are experienced senior students that are there to help new students, or just go for some sports or chill with friends to relax.

Making friends and expend your networks.

Having friends do help you with a smoothie transition in your first year to get yourself involved. Making more friends can not only help you do better in your academic course since you can help each other with the study materials and knowledge, but also help you in your student life. I remembered that I got my first campus job from a friend’s reference. Thus, it really makes a big difference if you have more friends, no matter where! So guys, making friends before school starts!

Last but not least, enjoy your first year!!!
