Brief Tour of York U (Part 1)

Hi everyone, welcome to York University

Today, I will be conducting a brief campus tour for you guys. I am super excited because usually I do the walking tour and today is my first time to experience with you on my blog (So nervous but excited :D).

York University is built in 1959 and is almost 53 years old :) York is Canada’s third largest university! We have two campuses; the main campus is Keele campus and the other one is Glendon campus, which is known for its bilingual programs; Courses are offered in both English and French. York University has approximately 457 acres of land, which is equivalent to 407 NFL size football fields. We have a population of over 50000 students; combine with professors and staffs, a total population of 62000. We have over 100 different programs at York and offer more than 5000 courses. The most important strength of York is its interdisciplinary learning approach, a studying method that combines students’ learning interest and allows them to excel.

The building in the above picture is a very unique building known as Vari Hall. I often like to view it as the main gate to a big house because Vari Hall is connected to the Curtis Lecture Halls, Ross Building, Accolade West and the Student Centre, which we will be introduced later. Vari Hall is the centre of the Keel Campus. Many special events are held in Vari Hall, including clubs tabling, our annual poster sales and also big events such as Fall Campus Day and Spring Gala. Right behind Vari Hall is one of our oldest buildings, the Ross Building. The building is 9 stories high and is name after our first university president Murray Ross.

This is our Fine Art building; consisting of Accolade West and Accolade East buildings. The picture above displays Accolade East which is the centre for Fine Art. In the Fine Arts program, we offer Film, Design, Dance, Theatre, Visual Arts, Music, and Digital Media studies. Some of our outstanding Fine Art facilities include: the international well known Art Gallery of York University, a 325 seat recital hall with integrated recording studio, a state of the 325 art seat theatre with orchestra pit, and lastly choreography studios for modern, ballot and world dance.

Does any of the above trigger your interests in the Fine Art program? However, even if you are in a different program, let’s say that you are majoring in Chemistry; you could still take a dance or music course as your elective. Someone may ask, what is the connection between dance and chemistry? Well, let’s just say that York wants you to expand your options and opportunities as defined by the York logo “Redefine the Possible” :) For those who are interested in the Fine Art program, make sure to check our Fine Art Tours and information session options in the Spring Gala, which is on March 31, 2012. (Continued…. Stay tuned :)
